Association website development

Member portals, gated content, directories, and events for associations and nonprofits, connected to your membership system and built to WCAG 2.1 AA.

Who this is for.

Associations have more going on behind the website than most organizations. These are the groups I usually work with.

  • Professional associations

Members expect their resources, events, and renewals in one place, and staff need the website to work with the membership system.

  • Nonprofits with public and member content

Some content is public, some is for members only, and some is for specific groups or committees. Access rules have to be reliable.

  • Industry associations and regulators

You publish data, reports, and maps that need to be clear, accurate, and accessible to the public.

  • Organizations leaving an old platform

Years of pages, documents, and member data need to move without broken links or lost information.

What I deliver.

Membership website development comes down to getting members to the right content quickly, and making the platform manageable for staff.

  • Member portal development

A signed-in area where members find resources, manage their profiles, register for events, and renew, connected to your membership system.

  • Gated content and access rules

Content visible to the public, to members, or to specific member types and committees, with rules your staff can manage.

  • Member directories

Searchable directories of members, firms, or practitioners, with privacy controls and a way for members to keep their own profiles current.

  • Events and dues

Event listings, registration, and payment, plus dues and renewals, handled through your membership platform or the website.

  • Integrations and single sign-on

Connections to association management systems, CRMs, learning platforms, and payment providers, with single sign-on so members log in once.

  • Accessibility to WCAG 2.1 AA

Accessible design and development, checked with keyboard and screen reader testing, so every member and visitor can use the site.

  • Content migration

A migration plan for pages, documents, and data, with redirects so existing links and search rankings carry over.

How it works.

  1. Step 1: Discovery

We talk with staff about members, content, systems, and goals, and review your current website and membership platform.

  2. Step 2: Content model and access rules

I plan the content structure, member types, and who can see what, before design starts.

  3. Step 3: Integration and migration plan

I map how the website connects to your membership system and how content and data will move from the old site.

  4. Step 4: Design and build

The site is designed and built on a staging server, with regular reviews and accessibility checks along the way.

  5. Step 5: Migration, testing, and training

Content moves across, integrations and single sign-on are tested with real accounts, and staff are trained.

  6. Step 6: Launch and support

A planned launch with redirects and monitoring, then ongoing maintenance if you want it.

  • CONTENT MODELLING / GATED CONTENT / INTEGRATIONS / SINGLE SIGN-ON

    Association website platform

I led development on a large association website platform for an agency partner. The work covered content modelling, gated content and access rules, data migration planning, third-party integrations, and single sign-on. The agency and the association are not named, which is how white-label work should be.

Why Reddogdesigns.

I led development on a large association website platform for an agency partner, covering content modelling, gated content and access rules, data migration planning, third-party integrations, and single sign-on. I bring that experience to every association project, whether I work with you directly or through your agency.

  • 25 years building for the web

I have run Reddogdesigns since 2001 and have seen most of the ways a web project can go wrong, so I plan around them from day one. As a senior UX/UI designer and front-end developer, I do the design and the code myself, so nothing gets lost in a handoff.

  • Craft CMS since 2013

I have worked with Craft CMS almost exclusively since it launched in 2013, and I build on WordPress and Shopify when they suit the project better.

  • Enterprise background

Past clients include Adobe, SAP, Disney, lululemon, Telus, Oracle, National Geographic, and design agencies across North America.

  • Flexible capacity

Reddogdesigns is a solo studio. I bring in trusted design, development, and content specialists as a project needs them, and use AI-assisted development to deliver faster. You always deal with me.

Frequently asked questions.

How much does association website development cost?

Association and member platforms typically start at $30,000 CAD. The cost depends on portal features, integrations, single sign-on, and how much content and data needs to move.

Can the website connect to our membership system?

Usually, yes. Many association management systems offer an API or single sign-on. I review your system early so the integration is planned from the start, not added at the end.

How does gated content work?

Each page or document can be public, members only, or limited to certain member types or committees. Members sign in once and see what they have access to. Staff manage the rules in the CMS.

Can members use one login for everything?

Often, yes. With single sign-on, members use the same login for the website, membership system, and other connected platforms, as long as those systems support it.

Will the website meet WCAG 2.1 AA?

I design and build to WCAG 2.1 AA, including colour contrast, keyboard access, screen reader support, and accessible forms, and test throughout the project.

Can you migrate content from our current website?

Yes. I plan the migration of pages, documents, and data, set up redirects from old URLs, and check that nothing important is lost.

Do you work with nonprofits across Canada?

Yes. I work with associations and nonprofits across Canada and the US, directly or through their agency.
